A good night's sleep shouldn't require choosing between a bed that's warm enough in winter and one that doesn't feel stifling in summer.
One of the reasons we're drawn to natural mattresses at Prairie Earth is surprisingly simple: the materials themselves can help create a more comfortable microclimate around the body.
Wool, organic cotton, and natural latex behave differently from many of the synthetic foams and fiber fills commonly used in mattresses. Rather than creating comfort solely through layers of cushioning, these materials allow air and moisture to move through the bed.
The result is not a mattress that magically makes you hot or cold.
It's something subtler—and arguably more useful:
a sleep environment better able to respond as conditions change.
What Is a Sleep Microclimate?
When we climb into bed, we create a tiny climate of our own.
Body heat warms the mattress and bedding beneath us. Blankets trap some of that warmth above us. Moisture from the body enters the air and textiles surrounding the skin.
The temperature and humidity inside that small space between the body, mattress, and bedding is sometimes called the bed microclimate.
And it changes constantly.
Your bedroom may be cool when you first get into bed and warmer several hours later. Humidity changes with the weather. Our bodies themselves change temperature throughout the night.
Instead of thinking only about whether a mattress is "cooling," we think it's more useful to ask:
How well can the materials around us respond to those changes?

Wool is particularly fascinating.
A wool fiber can absorb water vapor from its surrounding environment and release that moisture again as conditions change.
That means moisture doesn't simply have to remain against the body.
At the same time, wool's naturally crimped fibers create countless tiny pockets of air. Those air spaces provide insulation while allowing the material to remain breathable.
This helps explain something that initially sounds contradictory:
Wool can help keep us warm without necessarily making us hot.
It's why wool has been used across remarkably different climates for centuries—and why it makes so much sense inside a mattress, mattress pad, topper, or comforter.
Rather than thinking of wool simply as a "warm" material, think of it as a responsive insulating material.
Organic Cotton: Breathability at the Surface
Cotton performs a different role.
Its soft, breathable fibers readily absorb moisture and allow air to move through the textile, making cotton particularly comfortable close to the body.
That's one reason you'll find organic cotton throughout the natural sleep products we select—from mattress ticking and jersey-knit latex covers to sheets, protectors, and quilted mattress pads.
Cotton creates a comfortable textile surface while allowing the layers beneath it to do their work.
Natural Latex: Comfort Without the Cocoon
Then there is the mattress itself.
Natural latex is a resilient cellular material. Unlike the dense, slow-response sensation associated with some memory foams, latex responds immediately to pressure and quickly recovers as the body moves.
Its cellular structure also allows air to move through the material.
This doesn't mean that every person will experience a latex mattress as "cool." Temperature comfort is highly individual and is influenced by everything from room temperature and bedding to physiology and humidity.
But latex provides an appealing foundation for a bed designed around airflow rather than heat retention.

A bed that feels wonderful on a humid August night may feel entirely different in January.
What we really want is balance.
We want excess heat and moisture to have somewhere to go. We want enough insulation to remain comfortable when the room is cold. And we want materials that can respond as the environment around our bodies changes.
That's why we prefer the idea of natural temperature regulation to simply calling something a cooling mattress.

Think about the way we dress throughout the year.

Consider the entire bed:
What is your mattress made from?
Is your mattress protector breathable?
Are your sheets cotton, linen, or synthetic?
What fills your comforter?
How heavy are your blankets?
Does your mattress allow airflow beneath it?
What is the temperature and humidity of the bedroom?
A beautifully breathable mattress covered by an impermeable protector and polyester bedding can't perform the same way as part of a thoughtfully layered natural sleep system.
The whole bed matters.
