Latex may look like foam, but natural latex begins somewhere very different: with a tree.

Natural latex is made from the milky sap of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. The trees can be tapped for their latex without being cut down, allowing them to continue producing this renewable raw material for years.

When transformed into mattress cushioning, natural latex becomes remarkably resilient, breathable, and supportive. It responds immediately to the body, gently cushioning pressure while maintaining a buoyant quality that feels distinctly different from conventional polyurethane or memory foam.

From Rubber Tree to Mattress

Natural latex begins as liquid sap harvested from rubber trees.

The trees are carefully tapped so the latex can be collected without cutting them down. The liquid latex is then processed, molded, and cured into the resilient material used in mattresses, toppers, and pillows.

The result doesn't behave like the liquid latex from which it began.

It becomes a durable cellular material capable of providing both structure and softness, depending on how it is manufactured.

This versatility is what makes latex particularly interesting for mattress design.

A firmer latex layer can provide the foundation of a mattress, while softer latex above it can cushion the shoulders, hips, and other pressure points.

Dunlop + Talalay

You will see two terms frequently in our natural mattress collection: Dunlop and Talalay.

They aren't different species of latex. They refer to different methods of transforming liquid latex into finished mattress material.

Dunlop Latex

The Dunlop process creates a substantial, resilient latex that works particularly well for support.

At Suite Sleep, Dunlop latex is used extensively in mattress cores and supporting layers. Depending on the mattress, you may be able to choose between Medium and Firm Dunlop support.

Think of Dunlop as the foundation: supportive, durable, and substantial.

Talalay Latex

The Talalay process includes additional manufacturing steps that create a lighter, exceptionally consistent latex structure.

Suite Sleep uses plush Talalay in the upper comfort layer of its Portfolio Mattress, where its softer, responsive character provides luxurious cushioning above the more substantial Dunlop layers below.

Think of Talalay as the comfort: buoyant, responsive, and beautifully plush.

Neither is inherently "better."

They simply perform differently—and thoughtful mattress construction uses those differences intentionally.

What Does GOLS Certified Organic Latex Mean?

You will see GOLS-Certified Organic Latex specified throughout the Suite Sleep collection.

GOLS stands for the Global Organic Latex Standard.

Rather than relying on vague terms such as "eco-friendly" or "green," certification provides a defined standard for organic natural rubber latex and establishes requirements related to its processing and supply chain.

For Prairie Earth, certifications like GOLS matter because they provide greater transparency about what we're bringing into the home.

Natural Latex vs. Conventional Foam

Most conventional foam mattresses rely heavily on polyurethane foam, a material derived primarily from petrochemical feedstocks. Memory foam is itself a specialized form of polyurethane.

Natural latex offers a fundamentally different material approach.

Instead of creating comfort primarily through petroleum-derived foam, a natural latex mattress uses processed rubber-tree sap to create both cushioning and support.

The sleep experience is different, too.

Memory foam tends to soften with body heat and slowly conform around the sleeper.

Natural latex responds immediately to pressure and quickly returns to shape when that pressure is removed.

People sometimes describe this as sleeping on rather than in the mattress.

Neither sensation is universally right for everyone, but for sleepers who prefer responsive support and freedom of movement, natural latex can be an extraordinary material.

Natural latex becomes especially compelling when paired with other thoughtfully selected natural materials.

What About Latex Allergies?

It's reasonable to wonder about latex allergies when considering a natural latex mattress.

Latex allergy is associated primarily with exposure to proteins found in natural rubber latex, particularly through direct contact with latex products.

In a finished mattress, however, the latex is not generally exposed directly to the sleeper. It is enclosed within textile layers and the mattress cover. In Suite Sleep mattresses, individual latex layers are additionally socked in organic cotton jersey knit.

Anyone with a known or serious latex allergy should consult their healthcare professional before purchasing or using a natural latex mattress.

We believe transparency is more useful than pretending a natural material is appropriate for absolutely everyone.

Why Does Natural Latex Cost More?

A premium natural latex mattress can cost substantially more than a conventional foam mattress.

Part of what you're purchasing is the material itself.

Natural latex begins as an agricultural product, must be carefully harvested and processed, and—when certified organic—must meet additional standards throughout its production.

Premium mattresses may also use substantial quantities of it. The Suite Sleep Portfolio, for example, contains approximately 11 inches of natural latex, combining different latex types and densities to create its support and comfort system.

Natural materials, certified supply chains, skilled manufacturing, and substantial construction cost more than producing many conventional polyurethane foams.

The intention, however, isn't disposable comfort.

It's to create something worth living with.

Designed for a Longer Life

One of the qualities we appreciate most about natural latex is resilience.

A mattress is used more intensively than almost any other piece of furniture in the home. Night after night, it supports the same concentrated areas of body weight for hours at a time.

Latex is particularly well suited to that demanding application because it compresses and recovers repeatedly while maintaining its supportive character.

Longevity matters environmentally as well as economically.

The longer a well-made product remains useful, the less frequently it needs to be replaced.
