Lawrence, Kansas — 2021
Photography by Jamaica Jones
Layers of oxidation spread across weathered steel in muted rose, ochre, and sand. What once served a purely functional purpose shifts toward abstraction — an unplanned composition shaped by exposure, moisture, and time.
The photograph isolates this moment of transformation. Steel responds slowly to air and water, pigments emerging gradually through oxidation rather than design.
Rather than romanticizing deterioration, the image observes material change as record — color and texture accumulating through environment, duration, and use.
Surface is a study of material, texture, and the visible imprint of time. The series focuses closely on stone, metal, wood, and built elements shaped by weathering and use. Removed from broader context, each image reveals how surfaces record history—through erosion, patina, repetition, and wear.
