Title: Barn Texture with Rope
Series: Surface
Location: Emporia, Kansas
Year: 2017
Medium: Archival Pigment Photograph
Artist: Jamaica Jones
Weathered boards hold layers of faded paint—red, blue, and gray softened by years of sun and exposure. A length of rope runs vertically across the surface, its braided fibers cutting a taut line through the shifting color and grain.
Knots, wood grain, and worn pigment intersect in a restrained study of use and time. The rope introduces tension—both literal and visual—against a surface shaped by weather, repair, and repeated contact.
Rather than centering narrative, the photograph observes the quiet interaction of materials: fiber against wood, pigment against exposure.
Surface is a study of material, texture, and the visible imprint of time. The series focuses closely on stone, metal, wood, and built elements shaped by weathering and use. Removed from broader context, each image reveals how surfaces record history through erosion, patina, repetition, and wear.
