Tatsuno, Japan — 2017
Photography by Jamaica Jones
A rusted steel container rests at the edge of a cultivated field, its surface marked by years of exposure. Industrial red meets ordered rows of green and yellow, placing labor and landscape in quiet proximity.
Rather than emphasizing contrast, the photograph observes coexistence. Steel weathers beside soil under cultivation, each shaped by time, work, and environment. The container feels neither abandoned nor celebrated—simply present within the rhythms of season and use.
Surface corrosion and surrounding growth reveal parallel processes: material altered by exposure, land shaped through care and repetition.
Still Ground explores landscapes shaped by long-term care and natural cycles. Prairie, cultivated fields, stone, water, and built structures appear as environments held in quiet continuity. Rather than dramatic moments, the series focuses on presence—what remains, what recovers, and how land holds memory over time.
