Title: KU Memorial Campanile & Carillon
Series: Illuminated
Location: University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas
Year: 2021
Medium: Archival Pigment Photograph
Artist: Jamaica Jones
Under the Hunter’s Moon, the Memorial Campanile rises from the hillside as evening settles across the landscape. The full moon crowns the tower while the lawn and surrounding trees fall into a quiet, luminous glow.
Photographed on the campus of the University of Kansas, the composition balances scale and stillness — stone against sky, vertical ascent against the grounded terrain of the hill.
A structure designed to mark time through sound becomes, briefly, a visual anchor. Light reframes the monument as presence rather than symbol.
Illuminated explores moments when structure and symbol are transformed by light. Photographed at dusk, night, or during transitional hours, the series observes how monuments, landmarks, and built forms shift in atmosphere and perception. Familiar forms become quieter and more reflective, shaped as much by illumination as by the materials that hold them.
